UN chief’s report on IYV 2001 follow-up activities released
The report of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General on “Follow-up to the Implementation of International Year of Volunteers (IYV) 2001” has been released in six UN working languages. The UN General Assembly will consider the report’s findings and recommendations in late 2005 during its 60th session.

The report highlights the major areas where, building on the achievements of IYV, the environment for expanding and diversifying levels of volunteerism can be strengthened. It concludes that while the momentum built up over IYV continues to provide the stimulation behind a vibrant volunteer movement, there are wide variations in trends between countries and regions.

There are plenty of reasons for criticizing overseas volunteering schemes. The work of well-intentioned but inexperienced volunteers can hardly have a sustainable impact on developing communities. It can even have a detrimental effect; fostering colonial attitudes and reinforcing the disempowerment and dependence of the South.

Uzbekistan notebook: The experiences of a Peace Corps Volunteer

This three-part volunteer story, written by Jessica Teicher, speaks of the joys of teaching English to Uzbek kids and knowing Uzbek culture and its people while volunteering. But it was dampened when the government refused to extend the volunteers' visas. They left after only five weeks instead of staying for two years as planned.
