International Conference on Volunteerism & the MDGs
The Government of Pakistan is hosting a three-day International Conference on Volunteerism and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Islamabad from 5 to 7 December 2004. The conference, to be opened by the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shaukat Aziz, will consider the actions needed to promote and advance volunteer contributions as an essential ingredient to achieve the eight goals.

UK prepares for ‘Make A Difference Day’
A record-breaking 100,000 people are expected to take part in UK’s biggest volunteering celebration, Make a Difference Day, on 30 October. The event is organized by Community Service Volunteers, the country’s largest volunteer-involving organization.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, together with the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs and the Global Youth Action Network, recently organized a “Women’s Economic Workshop,” to teach women how to set-up businesses in Accra, Ghana.

Volunteers improve skills of Viet Nam software firms
Thirteen Viet Nam-based software companies recently received intensive, hands-on training from Geek Corps volunteers in Capability Maturity Model (CMM), an industry standard in software development. The four GeekCorps volunteers – Lawrence Kaaria, Jesse Chen, Catherine Adams, and Michael Chapman – are experts in the process of CMM certification and software development.

With volunteers helping on every aspect of the campaign, release parties around the globe, and a full-page ad in the New York Times, the Mozilla Foundation (http://www.mozilla.org/) is launching its new Firefox 1.0 Web browser in true open-source style.

After the onslaught of Hurricane Ivan, the United Nations Volunteer Programme in Jamaica and several volunteer organizations agreed to focus this year’s International Volunteer Day on an island-wide hurricane recovery effort.

More than 300 volunteers are assisting the organizers of the second Beirut International Marathon in many preparatory activities to make it a success. The marathon will take place on 10 October 2004 with about 12,000 participants competing.

Volunteerism the 'glue' that holds society together: UNV chief
”The volunteer movement forms an important part of global social capital and has to address the challenge of finding ways to strengthen the potential of local voluntary action,” said Ad de Raad, Executive Coordinator of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, in a speech during the closing ceremony to mark the 100th year of the Associazione Nazionale Pubbliche Assistenze (ANPAS).

With interest in four sports, 9-year-old Vincent Tachiyama plays hard, but he also works hard to help athletes enjoy sporting events of their own in the Special Olympics. Vincent has been volunteering with Special Olympics Hawaii since December, the first time he was old enough to help out.

The World Volunteer Web Speakers’ Corner
A community space to discuss volunteering issues

The WorldVolunteerWeb has launched the Speakers’ Corner to facilitate free and open discussions among community members on key volunteering issues. Discussions will be held in this online forum in thematic modules, to be moderated by experienced sector leaders. The forum has kicked off with discussions on the first topic: “What’s so special about volunteers? -Volunteers and environmental sustainability”. Discussions on this topic will continue until mid-December.

Muslim countries ask for Peace Corps volunteers
More Muslim countries are asking to be hosts for Peace Corps volunteers, which the agency's director says will help promote global peace and cross-cultural understanding. About one-fifth of Peace Corps volunteers are serving in 18 Muslim countries, out of over 7,500 who are serving in 71 countries.
